Role description
At its core, this role is about driving, creating and managing amaBhungane’s publishing, promotion and engagement.
- Lead publishing through amaBhungane’s website, our co-publishers and social media platforms.
- Lead branding and promotion, which includes driving audience engagement on social media and new distribution channels, digital strategy and the assessment thereof through analytics.
- Lead the process to develop and deliver digital content, which could include social media posts, graphics, videos, podcasts, etc.
This would include:
- Collaborate with the editorial team and audio-visual content creator to create digital content to accompany and/or augment investigations.
- Collaborate with the head of operations to develop the supporter journey programme.
- Collaborate with the head of advocacy to promote our strategic litigation and advocacy work.
- Collaborate with management and the broader team to refine the digital strategy.
- Collaborate with management to introduce new technology and innovation in the organisation.
Your direct line manager will be the amaBhungane’s editor, Sam Sole.
Requirements
- A solid understanding of the role and responsibilities of public interest media and investigative journalism.
- A solid understanding of digital strategy and the ability to conceptualise and execute projects to in line with this strategy.
- An interest in our work, the ability to understand complex investigations and translate them into new digital content.
- Self-managed and directed, with a focus on execution and delivery – in a small newsroom such as amaB, this includes writing tweets, designing graphics and writing scripts, not just developing strategy.
- The ability to work with and manage people, internally but also contractors, service providers, etc.
- A willingness to lean in and contribute, the flexibility to fill gaps beyond the job description, and the elasticity to acquire new skills.
Recommended experience
- Relevant qualification/s and 7 years in at least two of the following disciplines: journalism, graphic design/video production, strategy/marketing, audience engagement. Newsroom experience is ideal, but we welcome applications from those with work experience in civil society, research entities, etc.
Contract: 1-year full-time contract.
